What polishing does to the slab you have

Polished concrete flooring in Spring Valley is a finish rather than a covering. We grind and hone your existing indoor slab, harden it with a densifier and polish it to the shine you want, so the floor you walk on is your own concrete, only harder and glossier.

You probably have a bare gray slab in a garage, basement or shop, or one you just found under old carpet or tile. The price mostly moves with the size of the floor, how much glue, paint or old coating has to come off, how many cracks need filling and whether you want dye or a higher shine, because each of those adds grinding time. The schedule turns on the same things, and on what a moisture test shows if the slab sits right on the ground. I'll come out, look at the floor with you and write you an estimate for your space.

  • I look at every floor myself

I come out to every job, look at the slab with you and write the estimate, so the person pricing your floor is the one who answers for it.

  • Prep comes before the shine

Nobody sees the grinding once the floor is done, but it decides how the finish looks and holds up, so our crew takes its time on it.

  • A straight answer on your slab

I'd rather tell you plainly what your concrete can give you than sell you a finish that looks good for a season and then lets you down.

How we grind and polish your floor

Polishing shows the slab you already have, so I look it over with you first and tell you honestly which cracks and marks will still show when we're done. Then our crew takes off any old glue, paint or coating and grinds the surface with diamonds until it's flat and open, because a polish only looks as good as the cut under it. We fill the cracks, work up through finer and finer passes, put down a densifier to harden the surface, polish it to the shine you picked and finish with a guard coat to protect it. When we pack up, the floor should be the only thing that's changed.

Some floors call for a different finish. If you want color worked into the concrete, stained concrete flooring may suit you better than polish alone, and if you'd like the look of stone chips set in a smooth floor, terrazzo flooring is a separate job we also do.

What we settle before grinding in Spring Valley

Moisture coming up from the ground

On a slab poured right on the soil, moisture can work up through the concrete and damage a polished finish. Bring it up early, and we'll test the floor before any grinding starts.

Which office covers your address

San Diego County's Building Services Division issues permits for residential and commercial buildings in unincorporated areas, while some addresses here fall under a city. We check yours and walk you through any permit needed.

Dust control on every grind

California safety orders require a dust reduction system whenever powered tools cut or grind concrete. Ask any crew which one it uses, water on the work or vacuum dust collection. We're fully licensed and insured.

Why that dust matters

Grinding concrete raises fine silica dust, a known carcinogen that can cause silicosis, an incurable lung disease that's often fatal. We keep that dust down and leave your house the way we found it.

Get a free on-site estimate for your floor

Send the form and we'll reply within one business day to set a time. I'll come out, look at the slab with you and write up the estimate, free and with no obligation.

  • Tell us the room size

A rough length and width is plenty for the form. It gives me a sense of how much grinding the floor needs before I come out and measure it properly.

  • Send photos of any cracks

Pictures of the cracks and stains let me see ahead of time what will still show after polishing, so we can talk it through honestly at the visit.

  • Say if the slab sits on the ground

A slab poured right on the soil can pull moisture up from below. Knowing that early means we plan the test into the visit and work around what it finds.

Questions about polished concrete floors

Straight answers to what people usually ask before they decide to polish the concrete floor they already have in Spring Valley.

Will polishing hide the cracks in my concrete floor?

No, polishing won't make cracks disappear. We can fill them during polishing, but the filled lines will still be visible in the finished floor, so if you want a flawless look, plan on seeing them or ask me about a different finish. Either way, the job is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.

Can I change the color of my concrete floor when it's polished?

Yes, by adding dye during polishing. Without dye, the color is whatever the local concrete supplier's mix gave your slab, and there's very little, if any, way to change that base shade. If you want a new tone, we plan the dye into the job from the start so it goes in at the right pass.

How shiny will a polished concrete floor be?

It's as shiny as you choose, from a low sheen to a high gloss. The industry reads gloss with a clarity meter, which measures how sharp and reflective the surface is, and the same standard sets how much of the stone in the concrete shows. So you pick two things, the gloss and how much aggregate you want exposed, and we grind to match.

Is polished concrete slippery in a house or garage?

Polished concrete usually isn't as slick as its shine suggests. In a 2015 industry study, polished test slabs at different gloss and aggregate levels all exceeded the minimum friction rating set for indoor tile floors. That's a test result, not a promise for any one floor, so if slipping worries you in a certain room, tell me at the estimate.

Is my old concrete slab good enough to polish in Spring Valley?

Most slabs can be polished, but how yours looks afterward depends heavily on the concrete itself, because polishing finishes the slab rather than covering it. Patches, stains and old repairs tend to stay part of the look. If your slab won't give you the floor you want, I'll say so and we'll talk about a coating instead.
